Deep Silver Mulling Over Dead Island 2 Plans

Posted by admin on May 18, 2012 in dead island, deep silver, News, techland

Publisher Deep Silver is considering its options for the next Dead Island game and will make an announcement in due course.

A rumor surfaced earlier this week on IGN Germany that stated Deep Silver has signed developer Yager to create Dead Island 2. Yager is currently finishing up development on Spec Ops: The Line for 2K Games.

Deep Silver has denied the rumor, saying it has not begun work on a sequel just yet. “We are neither working with Yager on Dead Island 2 nor do we have any contractual agreement with Yager about any project at this point,"  Deep Silver development director Guido Eickmeyer told IGN.

“Yager and Deep Silver do have a very close relationship, based on personal and professional connections between the parties. There is a legitimate chance that we will - at some point - work together on a title - and I would not even exclude the possibility that this could be something within the Dead Island franchise.

"We have the greatest respect for this team, we absolutely love what we have seen so far from SpecOps - and we are constantly discussing potential opportunities. However, we have neither something in place or in discussion between the parties that would explain such a news, nor do we have Dead Island 2 in concept or production with external partners.”

The first Dead Island game was developed by Poland-based Techland and has since shipped over 3 million copies. The developer also recently registered a trademark for "Dead World," which could be a potential name for the next game.

Elder Scrolls Online Faction Profile: Ebonheart Pact

Posted by admin on May 18, 2012 in action, ESO, massive, mmo, pc, preview, the elder scrolls online, zenimax online

During the second era, in a time before any previous Elder Scrolls game, the world of Tamriel descended into a four-way war. In an attempt to conquer the continent, the Imperials – natives to the province of Cyrodiil – made a deal with the Daedric prince Molag Bal. At the beginning of Elder Scrolls Online, players join one of three factions that not only oppose the Imperials and Molag Bal’s undead army, but will also battle one another for the imperial throne. Elder Scrolls Online features three different alliances, three different philosophies, and three different ways to approach the game. Which will you choose? Today we take a deeper look at the Ebonheart Pact, represented by the dragon on the ouroboros.

Zenimax Online’s Take:
“About 50 years prior to the game, an Akaviri invasion came in and basically tried to take over,” says creative director Paul Sage. “What happens now is that the Dunmer and the Nords have formed an alliance because the attack was so bad that they realized they were weak to the Imperial rise. So they form an alliance of convenience with the Argonians. They’re surrounded by all these tides of opposing forces. They feel really threatened, so the Ebonheart’s entire purpose is to band together and make sure they’re no longer in danger.”

Provinces:

Many gamers are familiar with Morrowind thanks to the third entry in the Elder Scrolls series. Homeland of the Dunmer, Morrowind is separated into two parts: Morrowind proper and the island of Vvardenfell. The Sea of Ghosts cuts a giant U through the middle of the province, producing a lot of swampland while mountain ranges to the west isolate Morrowind from other provinces. Vvardenfell has historically been subject to a lot of volcanic activity, and some species depend on this ashfall for survival.

Of all of the provinces, Skyrim is probably the most well known thanks to last year’s Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Fans of last year’s game will likely be excited to see how ZeniMax Online has recreated the area for an MMO. Home of the Nords, Skyrim is a wealthy and powerful province despite its cold and sometimes inhospitable climate. Skyrim houses four out of Tamriel’s five tallest mountains.

Black Marsh is also sometimes called Argonia as it is home to the lizard-like Argonians. As the name suggests, Black Marsh contains a vast amount of marshlands and rainforests. The Hist, a race of sentient trees, also call Black Marsh home. The province’s tropical climate has made it difficult to cultivate its plant life. In fact, much of this swampland is teeming with poisonous plants and violent predators.

Races:
Dunmer, or Dark Elves, are an ashen-skinned, red-eyed people. Dunmer are often seen as proud, ruthless, and aloof, and are rarely willing to trust other races. Their above-average intellect, strength, and agility make them both strong warriors and capable sorcerers. Many Dunmer have been able to attain a balanced mastery of sword, bow, and destruction magic.

Nords are sometimes called children of the sky, since they are a tall, fair-haired race of humans who hail from the northern realm. The Nords are a militant people with an incredible resistance to cold and magical frost. These enthusiastic warriors are also natural seamen who have prospered greatly from their nautical trade.

Argonians are called Saxhleel in their native tongue of Jel, a term that means “People of the Root.” Argonians have historically been a slave race to invading bands of Dunmer, and years of defending their borders have made the Argonians talented in the art of guerrilla warfare. Naturally immune to many diseases and poisons, these reptilians are also very agile and make excellent thieves and magicians.

A MOBA For The Rest of Us

Posted by admin on May 18, 2012 in 231, action, awesomenauts, review, xbox 360

Don’t be fooled by the screenshots. Awesomenauts may look like a Mega Man-inspired 16-bit throwback, but it’s actually a 2D, pared-down version of popular MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) games like League of Legends. In many ways, it’s a perfect introduction to the concepts of the genre, within a framework that will feel familiar to gamers that grew up on more conventional action games.

From the first moment you boot the game up, Awesomenauts displays a sly sense of humor and great deal of charm. It’s clearly inspired by late ‘80s and early ‘90s cartoons, and even has a great Power Rangers-style cheesy rock theme song. The song perfectly captures the vibe of shows like Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The cast of characters is diverse, from the corny hip-hop amphibian Froggy G to the Mars Attacks-inspired Voltar the Omniscient.

At first blush, the game appears simple. You and two other players descend into the level via small crash landing pods, attack the opposite team’s fortified gun turrets with the help of small blast droids that spawn automatically on the battlefield, and try to blast through them to destroy their Solar drill and win the match.

In many ways, it is that simple. However, after I got my butt kicked for a few matches, I saw the tremendous amount of depth hidden behind the cartoonish aesthetics. Each character has a diverse set of abilities. Some, like Froggy G or Sheriff Lonestar, have fairly conventional movesets and carry guns of various sorts. Voltar is a defensive healer, which can be frustrating if you prefer combat. However, good teammates will learn how to work together – pairing Voltar with one of the lumbering tank characters like Clunk can be a powerful combination in battle. Even though, like many, I’ve all but given up on voice communication with random strangers online, Awesomenauts really does reward good planning and teamwork.

You must also use your blast droids and turrets effectively. Turrets defend themselves automatically with powerful mounted guns. On offense, you must wait for your droids to approach them and block the gunfire so you can attack – or attack from a higher platform while a teammate draws fire below. On defense, I found it effective to use a push or pull attack – like Sheriff’s stampeding bull or Leon Chameleon’s tongue grab – to force enemies into turrets, exposing them to heavy damage.

Each character has a jump, main attack, and two face button slots to equip for special attacks. All abilities can be upgraded before or during a match near the entry point for the level (a quick warp button makes it easy to jump back to the inventory store to buy new upgrades). As you gain XP and level (up to level 45), you’ll unlock new upgrades for all abilities – and you’re even able to select the three upgrade levels that are available to you during a match.

Once you dig into mastering each character’s abilities and upgrades, you’ll realize just how much depth developer Ronimo Games has integrated into an accessible, easy-to-learn design. However, this comes at a bit of a price. Since upgraded abilities are so key to victory, a snowball effect frequently occurs during matches. Better players stay alive longer, unlocking more attack upgrades, therefore becoming even more powerful. During nearly every match I played online, one player seemed to be dominating the action (spoiler alert: it wasn’t me). Still, I was never frustrated. Like any well-done multiplayer game, you learn something new in each loss, and eventually I was holding my own.

If you’re looking for single-player, look elsewhere. There is a practice mode with bots, but no single-player campaign. I have no problem with this decision – developers have to focus, and Ronimo was clearly intent on creating the best multiplayer experience possible. I also appreciate the fact that the game allows you to play online with three players on one console – a big plus if you want to engender true team play. Even playing solo, I found that the quick matchmaking worked admirably. I never waited long to get into a match, and dropouts and rage-quitters were instantly replaced by bots until a new player could be found.

If you’ve been curious about MOBAs, you couldn’t pick a better place to start than Awesomenauts. The three-on-three battles are easier to get your head around, but there’s still a ton of depth in balancing your team and each character’s various power-ups and load outs. It’s one of the year’s early multiplayer highlights. Don’t miss it.

How NASA and SpaceX Get Along Together

Posted by admin on May 18, 2012 in iss
mblase writes "SpaceX and NASA have been working hard to make this weekend's launch happen — and that has meant navigating the cultural differences between this small, young startup and the huge veteran space agency. The relationship involves daily calls and emails between people who live in two different worlds: age versus youth, bureaucracy versus a flat startup-like structure, and a sense of caution versus a desire to move forward quickly. But they both have an almost religious belief in the need for humans to venture forth into space, a geeky love for rockets, and technical know-how — plus, they both need each other to succeed." The launch is scheduled for 4:55AM EDT (08:55 GMT) tomorrow morning. NASA TV will begin coverage at 3:30AM EDT, and there will be a press conference at 8:30AM. SpaceX's press kit (PDF) has mission details. The rendezvous with the ISS is scheduled for day 4 of the mission after a series of maneuvering tests to ensure the Dragon capsule can approach safely. It carries 1,200 pounds of supplies for the people aboard the ISS, and it carries 11 science experiments designed by students.

Engineers have long sought to run diesel-like engines on gasoline for its higher efficiency and low emissions. Delphi's engine, using a technique called gasoline-direct-injection compression ignition, could rival the performance of hybrid automobiles at a cheaper cost."

Sprint Debuts Service for Customers with Speech Disabilities

Posted by admin on May 18, 2012 in Uncategorized

Sprint today announced a new service that will help customers who have speech disabilities communicate with others via their wireless phone. The My Wireless STS service works via a short code that when dialed connects the speech-disabled customer with a speech-to-speech operator. The operator can then complete the call and assist with the conversation, including word-for-word translation and/or help with words that are unclear. Calls can also be initiated via email sent to the STS operator rather than dialed via the short code. The service is available 24/7 and is free to use. It doesn't require any special equipment.

NHL 13 Combines Smarts & Skating Ability

Posted by admin on May 18, 2012 in EA Canada, EA Sports, electronic arts, hockey, NHL 13, playstation 3, preview, sports, xbox 360

The NHL franchise has become one of EA Sports' most consistently good series, but the innovations have been slowing down in recent iterations. NHL 13 will try to address some areas that are due for an upgrade.

SKATING

Players' speed on the ice will be highlighted to replicate the acceleration and top speed among different skaters. EA Canada says this will not only open up a host of new animations, but hopefully this will also mean that skaters can finally turn the corner on defenders unlike in previous NHL games.

HOCKEY I.Q.

The AI of skaters and goalies will get a boost as they will be more aware of those around them. Last year's game did a good job of keeping teammates onsides, and it sounds like this new feature could lead to better awareness by goalies of off-puck skaters sneaking into the slot or two-on-one situations. This could also mean better cycling in the offensive zone as well.

The game is also boasting customizability so you can try to mimic the strategies of teams. Maybe we'll see a repeat of the Lightning and Flyers' 1-3-1 neutral zone/forecheck stare-down.

GM MODE

The GM mode is taking a big step forward with GM Connected. This takes the Be a GM mode and not only brings it online in a 30-team NHL league, but also lets you and your friends fill specific roles. You could all play with or against each other as players, or perhaps someone will specialize in a role like being a GM or coach. The mode is also supported by a mobile app.

NHL MOMENTS

You can re-live moments from the current season in the game (augmented by real-life footage), and new situations from next season will be added after the game ships.

(Please visit the site to view this media)

This is just the beginning of the game's features, so come back on Monday, May 21 when we'll reveal more about the game.

NHL 13 ships for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 11, and will also feature a NHL 13 Stanley Cup Collector's Edition ($79.99) featuring:

  • Embossed Stanley Cup tin
  • Two Stanley Cup-themed Ultimate Team packs
  • Gold Jumbo Ultimate Team pack w/ 24 items, including an exclusive Wayne Gretzky Ultimate Team Legend
  • CCM Boost Pack w/ the CCM RBZ stick for use in Be a Pro and the EASHL
  • A one-time 10% discount at the NHL.com shop
  • The game, of course

Geeks In the Public Forum?

Posted by admin on May 18, 2012 in politics
cedarhillbilly writes "In his new book The Geek Manifesto, Mark Henderson 'pleads for citizens who value science to force it onto the mainstream political agenda and other main walks of life.' There are some important questions that need answers: 'Do you have to give up your tech practice to undertake a public role?' Also, 'Is political life (compromise, working by consensus, irrationality) antithetical to the "geek" values?'" The Guardian's coverage sums up the idea nicely: "What I desperately want is a move toward an evidence-based culture in politics. Politicians are free to say: 'I think people on drugs should be punished because drugs are immoral.' That's a moral call, albeit a rather stupid one in my opinion. What they shouldn't do is say: 'I want to reduce drug use, and sending all users to prison is the most cost-effective way to achieve that.' That's not at moral call, it's a factual statement; as such it should be evidence-based, or else the person making it should shut the hell up."

Verizon Accuses MetroPCS of Abusing Regulatory Process

Posted by admin on May 18, 2012 in Uncategorized

Verizon Wireless made scathing accusations against competitor MetroPCS in a letter it recently sent to the Federal Communications Commission. According to Verizon, MetroPCS's attempts to block its bid to acquire 122 AWS spectrum licenses from a consortium of cable companies is nothing more than an attempt to force the FCC to regulate LTE roaming agreements. Verizon said that MetroPCS's implications that Verizon Wireless is unwilling to negotiate roaming agreements is flat-out incorrect. "MetroPCS and Verizon Wireless have been engaged in roaming discussions, and they exchanged rate proposals last November. Verizon Wireless also offered to extend the negotiations, which had previously focused on voice and EVDO data roaming, to include discussions toward an LTE roaming agreement. In February, Verizon Wireless sent MetroPCS a revised offer and attempted to contact MetroPCS to continue negotiations, but until this week MetroPCS had not responded. It appears that MetroPCS has decided to try to wring conditions out of the regulatory process rather than negotiate commercial arrangements." Verizon's AWS spectrum acquisition has met with resistance from a number of companies in the wireless industry and is currently undergoing federal review.

ZTE Says Security Patch for Score In the Works

Posted by admin on May 18, 2012 in Uncategorized

Handset maker ZTE has confirmed reports of a security hole in its Score Android smartphone and says a patch is being developed to plug the hole. "ZTE is actively working on a security patch and expects to send the update over-the-air to affected users in the very near future," ZTE said in a statement emailed to Reuters. "We strongly urge affected users to download and install the patch as soon as it is rolled out to their devices." Researchers discovered the security hole, which they are describing as a backdoor that could allow others to take control of the handset. ZTE and Chinese counterpart Huawei have struggled to make inroads with U.S. network operators due to security concerns, though the concerns center more on networking gear than with consumer devices.

Social Networking: The New Workplace Smoke Break

Posted by admin on May 18, 2012 in social
snydeq writes "J. Peter Bruzzese sees a solution for organizations seeking to cut down employee time spent on social networks at work: treat social networking like a smoke break. 'Try as you might to keep social networks at bay, mobile devices let people be in constant connection to their social networking vices over the cellular networks, which you can't block. Still, it's not completely impossible to stop social time-wasting over mobile: You can establish policies that, if enforced strongly enough, eliminate social networks from being accessed on company time. Treat it like smoking: Let employees take a 15-minute coffee/smoking/Facebook break and make them go to a designated area to do it.'"

Android Hackers Honing Skills In Russia

Posted by admin on May 18, 2012 in android
MikeatWired writes "The malware business growing around Google Android — now the leading smartphone operating system — is still in its infancy. Today, many of the apps built to steal money from Android users originate from Russia and China, so criminal gangs there have become cyber-trailblazers. Sophos and Symantec on Wednesday released their latest Android malware discoveries written in Russian. While the language narrows the number of potential victims, the social-engineering tactics used to get Android users to install the malware is universal. The gang tracked by Sophos is using fake antivirus scanners, while Symantec is tracking cybercriminals using mobile websites to offer bogus versions of popular games. Sophos says the criminals are like other entrepreneurs launching startups. They're starting in Russia, but have far greater ambitions. 'I don't think we can say that they're necessarily using it as a testing ground — think of it more as a local business that as it grows may gain multinational ambitions,' Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, said in an email interview on Wednesday. The cyber scam tracked by Sophos was reported this week by GFI Lab, which discovered links to the bogus antivirus software on Twitter. Sophos dug deeper and found that the .ru domains pointed to the same Internet protocol address hosted in Ukraine."
