arisvega writes "At a first level (the lowest court level in the Greek judiciary system) an order has been issued (article in Greek, Google translation is fair enough) for a 'plan on behalf of Internet Service Providers regarding he implementation of technological measures to deny access to internet users for webpages through which illegal copies of copyrighted work are being distributed.' The order seems to be general and descriptive, and is a manifestation of the implementation process for an even more general and vague larger-scale EU directive, which is the common source that caused the rulings recently posted on slashdot regarding the UK, the Netherlands and Finland. This appears to be one of the reasons that prompted Anonymous to launch defacing attacks on Greek government websites some three months back."

The deal, first announced in August 2011, makes Google the owner of Motorola Mobility, and is valued at $12.5 billion. The acquisition has already cleared regulatory hurdles in the U.S., the European Union, and other markets. Approval from China was the last step needed before Google could finalize the acquisition. The companies expect that the deal will close early next week.

U.S. Patent No. 8,180,688. 'Many people consume broadcast media such as television shows and movies for many hours a week,' Amazon explained to the USPTO in its patent application for a Computer-Readable Medium, System, and Method for Item Recommendations Based on Media Consumption. 'The consumed broadcast media may depict a variety of items during the course of the transmission, such as clothing, books, movies, accessories, electronics, and/or any other type of item.' So, does Amazon's spin on As Seen on TV advertising deserve a patent?"

An anonymous reader writes "MIT researchers have developed a highly articulated robotic manipulator based on soft materials that can harden to reposition the device. The technique is known as jamming, and it relies on pouches filled with granular material like coffee grounds; when air is removed from the pouches, they become rigid. The researchers combined jamming actuators with cables to build a manipulator resembling an elephant trunk. They say the device is low-cost, capable of grasping a variety of objects, and can remain in a hardened state for extended periods of time using little energy."

snydeq writes "With WWDC around the corner, iOS 6 rumors are taking center stage, but the real action for developers may be around iCloud. Forthcoming OS X Mountain Lion will integrate iCloud into the formal file system, making iCloud usage much easier and thus more common, and thanks to iCloud Documents, which lets apps open and save documents directly in iCloud, developers will be able to better tap iOS-to-OSX document syncing in their apps, a la iWork. But there is a downside to this opportunity: 'For developers, it further enmeshes you in the Apple ecosystem, almost in the way that America Online did in its heyday. Case in point: OS X apps can use the iCloud Documents APIs only if they are sold through the Mac App Store.'"

No, your eyes aren't deceiving you. In addition to hiring a graphic designer, Game Informer is also looking to add a wonderfully talented web designer/programmer. If you feel you're ready to take the first step and revel at the thought of working along side the GI crew, there's a few
things you should be aware of:

• You must either live in or near
Minneapolis or be willing to relocate to the Twin Cities area proper.
This can't nor will it ever be an off-site opportunity. We need you
here, in person, charming us on a daily basis.

• You must include
a resume along with at least six work samples that highlight your mastery of the essential web design/programming skills we're looking for – namely a robust knowledge of creating custom interactive experiences with html/javascript and flash/actionscript. A working knowledge of sound typography, composition, page layout,
color, and the ability to design across multiple mediums (print, web, tablet) would be even better.

• A working knowledge (or better) of video games, while not essential, would be beneficial.

•
You'll work independently with minimal supervision. What this means is
you'll need to think, act, and design/program like the wind at times. It's not
always crazy here, but know that this can be a very high pressure job
with multiple projects cooking at once.

• Highlight any
skills you feel make you particularly good fit for us. Got any extra programming skills you think we'd benefit from? Fancy yourself a web design guru? Able to sing The Star Spangled Banner backwards? Prove it.

• Be able and willing not only to accept
critical feedback (both good and bad), but deliver it as well.

So if you feel you fit the mold of the web designer/programmer we're looking for, send any samples, a resume, and desired salary range to jeffakervik@gameinformer.com.

Serious inquiries only, please. Here's all the "official" jargon pertaining to the opening:

Happy Diablo weekend to you. We hope you have a very Diablo weekend. May there be enough Diablo to satisfy all your desires. Roll Diablo beautiful Diablo Diablo. Diablo! Some of us might play Max Payne 3.

Tim Turi: This weekend I’ll be juggling my time as gaming’s biggest sad sack, Max Payne, and my brutal barbarian in Diablo III.

Andy Reiner: I'm in the studio all weekend to record Tripping Icarus' fourth album. Any free time I can find goes to Diablo III. Chris Kluwe, our bass player, and I are even playing the game between takes.

Ben Hanson: I have Max Payne 3 and Diablo III, and only one of them is tickling me in ways I never thought I could be tickled. When I started Max Payne 3 I came to the realization that I’m tired of shooting people. You know what I’m not tired of? Having my Witch Doctor hurl thousands of shattering clay pots filled with giant leaping spiders at the undead, Diablo 3 is just neat like that. I also downloaded the original Playstation game called Threads of Fate and I might play a bit more of that. Oh, and I will most likely continue playing the new Mario Tennis game for the 3DS, it is really great so far.

Jeff Marchiafava: This weekend I’ll be having two wildly different gaming experiences: I’ll be shooting dudes in the face in Max Payne 3, and building my own blocky home in Minecraft. Max Payne has all the explosive, gritty action I was hoping for. In my Minecraft world, I just set up a little farming area for growing sugar cane and wheat, and tamed my own pet wolf. I think I may have a multiple personality disorder.

Matt Helgeson: Going to see Blue Oyster Cult at the Ho-Chunk Casino in Baribou, Wisconsin.

Kyle Hilliard: I'll be playing Max Payne 3 and empathetically listening to my wife's complaints about trying to play Diablo III. I might also compete in a spelling bee.

The Space Apps Challenge, sponsored by NASA and Innovation Endeavors (an investment firm headed by Google's Eric Schmidt), asked international teams to submit ideas for apps offering solutions to global problems.

There were four types of challenges that teams could work on, including software, open hardware, citizen science, and data visualization. Within these broad categories were specific goals: for example, creating an open-source 3D printing platform that works in space or redesigning the Voyager Golden Record for 2012.

Thousands of people and organizations ultimately participated in the challenge (which gave them just one single weekend to come up with a demo or pitch), and the results are in. Before you say "ugh, I don't care about apps," take a look at these short videos highlighting the winners, because we're pretty sure you'll want to care about these.

The U.S. International Trade Commission today ruled that Motorola is violating a Microsoft patent pertaining to sending event invitations via mobile devices. As part of the ruling, the ITC banned a total of 18 devices from being imported into the country. Today's ruling was a final judgment based on a decision made by an administrative law judge last December. The ITC said, "The appropriate form of relief in this investigation is a limited exclusion order prohibiting the unlicensed entry for consumption of mobile devices, associated software and components thereof ... that are manufactured abroad by or on behalf of, or imported by or on behalf of, Motorola." The president has 60 days to review the exclusion order.

An anonymous reader writes "The folks at Facebook may be focusing on their IPO today, but a complaint filed in federal court has given them something else to think about. The filing consolidates 21 separate but similar cases and alleges Facebook invaded users privacy by tracking their browsing behavior even after they had logged out of the site. The claim seeks $15 billion in damages. 'If the claimants are successful in their case against Facebook, they could prevent Menlo Park from collecting the huge amount of data it collects about its users to serve ads back to them. Like the previous lawsuits, Facebook is once again being accused of violating the Federal Wiretap Act, which provides statutory damages per user of $100 per day per violation, up to a maximum per user of $10,000. The complaint also asserts claims under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, the Stored Communications Act, various California Statutes and California common law.'"

We tested a Shelby GT500CR, a modified and updated version of the original '67 Mustang muscle car, finding it even better than the real thing.

I sat staring at Carroll Shelby’s signature on the passenger-side dashboard of my GT500CR tester.

It was just days before the legendary Texan left us for that big racetrack in the sky. Shelby rocked automotive culture more times than most folks move apartments in his 89 years on earth — from winning Sports Illustrated‘s “Driver of the Year” award in 1956 and 1957 to building the Ford-powered AC roadster that defeated the then six-time champion Ferrari team at the 24 Hours of Le Mans two years straight.

And there I was, getting ready to drive a replica of his souped-up 1967 Mustang many have come to affectionately know as “Eleanor.” Reflecting on my experience now, a week after his passing, I can’t help but feel as if I were fated to drive the car.

Shelby raced, designed and collaborated on countless track and street machines during his illustrious campaign, but among his more widely known works are the snarling GT350 and GT500 Mustang mash-ups manufactured between 1965 and 1970.

Eleanor was one of these beasts. But of course, I wasn’t driving the real thing. My tester was a “restomod,” a version of the original metal that’s been restored accurately, but also upgraded with modern components.

According to Jason Engel, founder of Classic Recreations, the Oklahoma-based company officially licensed to build the Shelby GT500CR, a restomod is often better than the real thing. Technology and auto design have advanced considerably since the muscle cars’ heyday of the late ’60s and early ’70s, and such a machine shows its age today.

“The steering, suspension, skinny tires, heavy motor and dated cooling system mean it’s great for car shows or a quick cruise around the neighborhood, but not much fun to drive on a regular basis,” Engel says.

Classic Recreations starts with a real ’67 steel Mustang body, stripping it down to its skivvies and stuffing it with all manner of modern upgrades.

Restomod shops keep the vintage look, but update the suspension, the steering and the brakes, and also add things like fuel injection and A/C. The finished product has all the charm and appeal of a vintage ride, but with the reliability and driving experience of a modern vehicle. There’s certainly no denying that the restomod GT500CR possesses the soul of original, but I still wouldn’t recommend one of these babies for daily grinds to work in rush-hour traffic.

“Restomod buyers want something representative of history that actually works,” says Tom DuPont, founder of DuPont Registry, a marketplace for fancy, expensive cars, boats and other luxury lifestyle accoutrements. “You want to satisfy that nostalgic urge with a current version of the real thing. Think of it as a practical car you don’t mind leaving out in the rain at the country club.”

Classic Recreations is licensed by Shelby American to build ’66 and ’67 Shelby continuation vehicles. Each one is fitted with an official Shelby serial number that’s included in in the Shelby Registry. CR has been building these cars for only a few years — it picked up the business after the previous licensee, Texas-based Unique Performance, had its door busted in by the police during a fraud investigation for VIN irregularities in 2007.

CR starts with a real ’67 steel Mustang body (not a GT500 body), stripping it down to its skivvies and stuffing it with all manner of modern upgrades: coil-over-shock suspension in the front and rear, cross-drilled and zinc-washed brakes, a Mass Flo fuel-injected 7-liter engine with 545 hp and 5-speed Tremec transmission. Any sheet metal that’s been damaged or allowed to rust over the last 45 years is replaced, and the overall structure is reinforced to handle the extra power. (The engines in ’67 Mustangs varied dramatically, running either 6 or 8 cylinders and starting as low as 115hp.) Shelby-licensed body panels — listed in the brochure as “authentic Carroll Shelby Exterior Fiberglass enhancements” — and signature accessories and gauges complete the look. And, boy, does it look real.

In all, a dozen skilled craftsmen spend some 2,500 hours — about four months — building each one.

According to Sherrard’s posting, we shouldn’t expect to see shared family data plans on T-Mobile anytime soon and that’s just fine with me. It’s an interesting position and yet, Sherrard brings up some key points ... [read full article]

Amidst financial difficulty, 38 Studios released an environment fly-through video of its long-development MMO Project Copernicus.

The roughly 2-minute video gives you a good sense of the world the team has been working on for nearly six years. We don't know much about the game other than it takes places in the Amalur universe. A release date has not officially been announced, but Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee said at a press conference today he believes it's slated for June 2013.
